Let's do a quick recap: less than 2% of the total ocean area is covered by ecosystems that account for almost 50% of the carbon stored in ocean sediments (1). Is it worth taking care of and restoring these allies to mitigate global warming? Yes!!! We're talking about mangroves, sea grasses and salt marshes along the coast, which during the process of photosynthesis sequester carbon dioxide even more quickly than terrestrial forests. This carbon is called Blue Carbon, which is kept below ground for millions of years, if these ecosystems are preserved (2). On the Brazilian coast, mangrove soil, in particular, has the largest carbon stock in the country, storing up to 4.3 times more carbon in the first 100 centimeters of soil compared to other vegetated biomes (3). And to align our knowledge and practices with international initiatives, see here the booklet (4) that The Blue Carbon Initiative makes available on its platform, where there are other online resources (5).
