Upcycling

There was a discarded fishing net on the beach sand and, “what do I do with it?”. Faced with this question, knowing the work of 3 women, who in different locations, reflect and act in a supportive way with the environment, can help us. The question above comes from artist Nara Guichon, who, faced with the amount of waste on the beaches where she lives, decided to create works that “scream for the oceans” so that they stop being garbage dumps (1). Like her, we also find artisan Karine Portela Soares, helmsman of the Redeiras group, in Rio Grande do Sul, where the disposal of fishing materials is a source of work for women from the São Pedro Z-3 Fishermen's Colony (2). Thinking of a new purpose for a product that was unused, these women join the upcycling network, and with that, going beyond recycling, as it is about creating a final product and not a raw material yet to be transformed. Inspiration also comes from western Bahia with Rita Ribeiro, who makes the colorful plastic bag that ends up in the sea and becomes crochet thread (3).
